Albeit not a No. 1 cricket fan, no one could stay away from yesterdays all important knock-out, do-or-die World Cup India vs Australia quarter-final. Team India walked into the field with a air of confidence, almost cocky, after all they were playing in their own backyard. They were put in to filed first after the triple-champions Australians won the toss.

Beravement
The week has brought in its wake some sad news, my parents had to rush to my native city of Mangalore, Karnataka to attend the last rites of my mid-90’s year old grandpa’s brother who passed away. He was suffering from kidney failure. My father was one of the last one’s to speak to him when he ironically expressed how he was feeling much better & was happy his brother(my grandpa) had come to meet him that evening. He was a well-respected maths school-teacher by profession & the life of all functions & family gatherings. His tales & anecdotes made him the centre of all conversations. He shall be sorely missed & may his soul rest in peace. The only time earlier I heard my grandpa more grieved was when he talked about the death of his twin sister….
I had to stay at home & hold fort here , mother my younger sister who was giving her college examination. So I am currently incharge & have laid some ground-rules.

Japan- "Death, Destruction & Anguish"

When I reached home I read the whole news report , at first it was just a shock & I didn’t feel any emotion, no sorrow , nothing, almost inhuman, I wondered have we become so stone-hearted, immune to tragedies like the loss of a human life, that we read the number just like any other statistic? But as the number steadily rose to 300 & gory visuals were shown my eyes welled up. As the tragicness of the situation began to sink in, I realized the pettiness of my little troubles I had been whining about earlier.
The images will haunt us for a long time- Innocent people loosing their lives, all the chaos, then the lull, cars & houses floating in brown waters, stranded people signaling for help , a road split right in the middle, an oil refinery engulfed in flames……a scene straight out of those ‘end of world’ movies, I wrote about earlier. Our helplessness in front of mother natures forces….is scary!
Then the speculations begin & a ‘supermoon’ theory (which predicts large-scale geological disturbances as the moon moves to a point closest to the earth) starts to gain popularity. The way we try & theorise everything amuses me. Japan- a nation which has the most advanced equipments to deal with earthquakes devastated. Its in such times of grief we forget our differences & unite to help, is what showed when immediately many nations offered aid.
It saddens my heart to hear that poor father praying for his child under the debris, as I am sitting on my comfortable couch having dinner, the contrasts of the stark reality makes me feel almost guilty.Anyway lets hope there are no more lives lost & the tsunami does’nt strike again. May those departed souls , rest in peace.

A nothing day.
I had super sluggish day today. Lots of 'crappy television + chips' combo. I even gave the gym a miss. I was glued to my perfectly-positioned-favourite couch for a good half-day, only bothering to leave my vantage point to get something to munch on or answering my phone. Even the ringing of the doorbell failed to move me. By the end of the day, I needed to soothe my tired eyes with cucumber slices.
I was just watching the end of a closely contested World Cup cricket match ‘Ireland(underdogs) vs England’. The sassy Irish managed to chase down something over 320 odd, with a few balls to spare & win it from the clutches of the clumsy English. I have always been pro-underdog. There is some feel good factor involved whenever an underdog topples a biggie, against all odds.(the bookies definitely struck gold!!) The atmosphere gets electric. It fills your heart with some sort of hope. Three cheers to the beer guzzling Irish & the pink-blonde haired guy who won it for them!
Earlier I was watching ‘ Masterchef USA’ – the finale episode, it didn’t live up to its expectations. But again, the winner was a young 22 year old , country girl. Who would expect the youngest of the lot to win such a title while competing against so many experienced, smart rookies?! The world is always laughing at anyone young , some even get intimidated if you question them or have an opinion different to theirs. So though my favorite contestant ‘Sharone’- a quirky smart amateur chef was eliminated , I was glad a young girl came out a winner. Kudos!
Excuse me, now I have to stop typing as I am going to shift myself to my soft bed which is beckoning me, to catch up on some beauty sleep.
Yeah….I know…height of laziness!!;):)
