Regulating the internet!

Free speech and freedom of self-expression is all what the internet stands for. The Information and Technology minister of India has put his foot down on internet platforms to screen objectionable content and remove it based on their set guidelines. The opposition says the reason for this sudden intent of 'policing intrnet platforms' is the rise in the spate of anti-government sentiments and views, which could affect the popularity ratings of the leaders of the Congress party.
Personally I wouldn't want my views/opinions on anything to be pre-screened by anyone since the net is synonymous with democracy and is something the massess have easy access to and also its speed at disemmnating information is something no other media vehicle can match-up to. If I want to express my view on how the ministry is performing or why we need a change of government, there should be no law banning me from  stating this as this would hamper my basic right of freedom, the very principle on which are laws are based.
However since there were many confusions over the issue, Kapil Sibal clarified he wanted to curb abusive, objectionable content which has means to hurt the sentiments of minorities or something which has the power to cause protests should be removed , the question which immediately comes to one's mind is 'Who will  be the judge?' so in answer to that the he clarified the Governments position is that these platforms should set up self-regulating guidelines based on which they should allow/disallow content. Most of these platforms however already have a guidelines for content in place , so he is suggeting tweaking the guioelines as per 'Indian' sensitivities.
The question of regulating the Internet is unacceptable and unattainable, so all the hoo-haa on this subject has been unecessary and if the Government is taking cues from our Co-asian communist friends, they need to realise that this would invove stepping on the principles of democracy!
