In the Hindu culture we generally name children with Sanskrit names which have a meaning. Unless there are a pair of adventrous parents who might go for something different & modern. I personally like the sound of Sanskrit names & feel they give more depth to a name. Since it is the most ancient language , there a certain wisdom also attached to it. For some strange reason I have a fondness for names beginning with ‘N’ & ‘A’.
I have never understood the need to rhyme names of children , there were these neighbours of mine who named their daughters ‘Rinky’ & ‘Pinky’. Why, Seriously why??
Then there are these bunch of popular names which sound nice have a nice meaning attached to it ( there is a reason why they are popular) but it results into lot of confusion as there are so many going by the same name. My parents fell prey to this popular-name-syndrome.
Since we go through our entire lives with that name & it is a part of our identities, parents should act a bit responsibly when naming their adorable little ones. Imagine the plight of the boy who had to go through his life with ‘Chunnalal’ or girl named ‘Pinakshi’ ( sounds like a cocktail of two names, also doesn’t it remind you of a popular cocktail drink?)
Another embarrassing thing I have seen is boys named with normally what are girls names & vice versa. Also neutral names can leave you wondering, I faced this dilemma when I was preparing a document which needed the sex of the person against their name, I had never seen these people, so I had a difficulty classifying ‘Vicky’, ‘Joy’, ‘Snehal’, ‘Hetal’, ‘Leslie’.
Then there is the people whose native language is ‘Gujarati’ , a very common suffix to their names is ‘-esh’ which most of them pronounce as ‘aess’ which sounds like ‘ass’ & can be funny to an English speaking foreigner.
I read about this small village where the locals have come up with a new naming convention where they name the babies after something new they have heard so they have children named as ‘Nokia’ , ‘Robot’, ‘Congress’ etc. Funny ,right?!!
