Today in the times of fast paced, action-packed video game consoles with mind-lowing graphics, the Nintendos, PS3’s, PSP’s . The board game has lost its identity. Just the other day when my kid-cousins came over they insisted on playing an excellent car racing game titled ‘Burnout Paradise’ on the PS3 instead of good old monopoly which he thought was boring. Nor do I come across those huge racks filled with board games I used see to when I went to the super market as a kid, which clearly indicates the fall in demand. Me & my sister would beg my dad for one of those huge game boxes, the bigger, the better. This is a compilation of Board Games that make it to my Top 3:
1.Monopoly: It was introduced to me & my sisters by a fun-loving boyish-uncle when we visited his house one summer vacation. Buying a property( usually named after English cities) & collecting rent from anyone who landed on that place. Building houses, hotels, collecting double rents if you owned the entire range of similar coloured properties. The entire family including my aunt & uncle enjoyed this one. This shrewd aunt of mine always managed to win(I now suspect since she was the banker on most occasions , she may have nicked a few pounds on the sly!).For me those red-coded cities proved to be lucky charms.
2.Life: This is not a classic like Monopoly, but it was a rage when it came out . I remember my dad gifted it to me one Christmas night to cheer me up, as I didn’t receive any gift from the Santa at his annual office-sponsered Christmas party due to some confusion. My teary eyes shone with excitement on seeing the huge box. This game is a journey of life, hence the name. As you move ahead on this board you choose a profession , earn your salary on ‘Pay Day’, buy a car, buy insurance for it, visit your sick grandmother, meet with an accident, win jackpots, gamble , all as you spin the wheel of fortune. There is this dreaded spot at the end of the game, if you land on which you become Bankrupt. Just imagine losing all your money when you are so close to the finish line after almost a 2 hour game..tough luck! ‘Life’ can be hard sometimes...tch tch
3.Pictionary: This is one game which has been a source of laughter over the years. You try to draw & explain the word on the card. If someone doesn’t know the word they get they try to break & explain it. So when your friend tries to draw ‘Sunspot’ first he draws the sun which is easy & for Spot he does a a face with a dot, which noone guesses, so out of frusturation he points at a zit your face…embarrassing rite??!! People remember this stuff for years & now it’s a classic joke with which I shall be haunted with even on my deathbed. There are many hilarious moments associated with Pictionary.
